It’s a sun-drenched, blue-skied Tuesday afternoon in Montevideo, and the verdant treetops just beyond my balcony are practically glowing. All in all, it’s a perfect backdrop for sitting down to write about our fourth sketching challenge of 2019 — or what proved to be a delightful collection of sketches heralding the arrival of spring.
I always look forward to our challenges during this time of the year. While autumn is slowly casting its chill here in Uruguay, spring is officially underway across the Northern Hemisphere — and your sketches truly captured its triumphant return of color and warmth and new growth.
I loved rounding up your spring botanical sketches for this month’s theme just below, but there’s one particular image I wanted to share first — an image that really sets the scene for the season to come. It was captured by Jolene in Denver, Colorado, and shows a pair of young green buds that haven’t just yet begun to bloom.
“Impatiently waiting for the explosion of spring color!” Jolene wrote with her sketch, but I especially loved Amanda’s insightful response:
“What a capture of that moment before the beauty arrives.
Always so full of hope and imminent joy.”
Whether it be into autumn or spring, it’s amazing to think the whole world is in transition right now — changing rhythms, changing colors, changing seasons. And I hope that for all of us, these coming weeks will be marked by hope, joy, and the arrival of fresh beauty.

Cherry blossoms and magnolia blooms. Bougainvillea and flowering blackthorn bushes. Daffodils, hyacinth, and bluebell woods weaving a carpet of color across the forest floor.
These are just a few of the gorgeous florals you all captured and drew inspiration from during our April sketching challenge — and assembled together, I just love their delicate palette of pinks and greens and yellows. What a beautiful bouquet of blooms to celebrate the start of this new season!
