Dear Moment Sketchers,
There are so many things to celebrate about our virtual community. I love that we can all come together to sketch every month, no matter where we happen to be in the world at the time — and as you’ll see in our Motifs & Themes section below, some of us were sketching from some pretty unique corners of the world this month, from East Timor to Uzbekistan. I also love that the only things we need to connect with each other are Wi-Fi and a little app called Instagram.
And yet, as someone who very much believes in the magic of in-person connections, I also really love it when I have the chance to meet someone from our community not on the screen of my smartphone, but in real life.
Just last week, my full-day sketching workshop in San Francisco was about to kick off, when a woman I’d never met before approached me. “Hi Candace,” she said, “I’m Jill Browne.” For those of you who regularly take part in our sketching challenges, you’ll no doubt recognize Jill’s name instantly — she’s a Moment Sketcher from Canada who has been part of our sketching challenges from the very beginning (since our first challenge in January 2017, in fact!), joining in from both her hometown of Calgary and from across the world on her travels.
Our surprise encounter last week not only got the workshop off to such a meaningful start for me, but it also feels like the perfect moment to begin this month’s review with, too — because whether we’re connecting online or in person, our community is truly something special, isn’t it?

“Bring your humanity to your art.
Bring your art to humanity.”
— Maxime Lagacé
From the moment our August sketching challenge kicked off two weekends ago, I was blown away by where our community was joining in from around the world: from Alan sketching in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, to Lois at a local market in East Timor. From your own backyard to the farthest-flung corners of the world, I’m thrilled to present this month’s collection of sketches.

Moment Sketchers, thank you all for sharing such fascinating corners of the world with our community this month…see you in September!
